what it fixes
Ice is the one surface in the game that ignores your inputs. You slide past ledges, overshoot jumps, and keep drifting after you have let go of the key. Skates take most of that away. You reach speed almost immediately and you stop close to where you meant to.
it does not make you faster
Worn alongside any of the boots, the ceiling on your run speed is unchanged. What you gain is hitting that ceiling on ice as quickly as you would on dirt. Treat it as a control accessory rather than a movement upgrade and it never disappoints you.
thin ice, both ways
You stop punching through thin ice when you land on it, which is usually what you want, and Dangersense stops flagging the stuff as a hazard for the same reason. If you are deliberately trying to drop into the water below, take them off first. The landing hurts either way.
where it goes
It is a component more than a destination. Frostspark Boots and Arctic Diving Gear both want it, and both carry the ice handling forward, so there is little reason to hold onto the bare accessory once you can build either.
