Sawmillplacing and filling one
It needs a two by two space and it is not fussy about what that space is: background wall, the side or underside of blocks, or the top of a platform. Once it is up, hold whatever you want on display and press the open key on the frame to slot it in. The same key takes it back out, and so does a pickaxe if you want the frame gone with it.
against the weapon rack
Both will hold a weapon and the difference is orientation. A Weapon Rack points its contents whichever way you placed it, so a row of them ends up inconsistent unless you are careful about the direction you face. The frame always shows the item the same way round no matter how it went up, which is why long tidy rows are easier with these. Paint applies to the frame and never to what is inside it.
two things that catch people out
- A favorited item will not go in at all. Unfavorite it first, hang it, and it stays put.
- Size modifiers carry through to the display. A massive weapon and a tiny one genuinely look different on the wall, so when you are building a trophy room the prefix you want is the one that looks right rather than the one that fights well.
items that behave oddly
A handful of things do not display the way you expect. Gel and Shark Fin revert to their default colors instead of the variant you put in. The Rubblemaker shows only the shovel and loses the bar that sits next to it in your inventory. The Torch God's Favor is the one that appears lit inside a frame, which no other light related item does. Worth knowing before you plan a wall around one of them.
hiding the frame
Echo Coating on the frame leaves the item apparently floating on bare wall, which is the cleanest version of a display shelf and the reason most collection rooms look the way they do. If you do not have coating yet, Shadow Paint on the frame plus shadow painted wall behind it gets close to the same result.
