what a trapped chest is for
A trapped chest looks like storage but has no slots at all. Opening one fires a signal down any Wire attached to it, so it is the bait half of a trap. Run the wire to a Dart Trap, a Teleporter, a lava dump or an Announcement Box and you have a room that punishes curiosity.
Any chest can be converted, hence the long list of variants. A rigged Skyware Chest on a floating island reads as loot rather than a switch. Matching the chest to the room is the whole craft, and adventure maps are where they earn their keep.
the two broken ones
The pair of nameless entries in the item list are leftovers: first attempts at trapped Crystal and Golden Chest versions, abandoned when the working chests shipped later as separate items. Nothing in normal play gives you one. Inventory editors, glitches, and the I am error seed, where they replace chests during generation, are the only sources, and unlike most unobtainable items they survive a game restart in your inventory.
Placed, they wear the crystal and golden looks and wire up like any other trapped chest. If one holds items, which only happens in that seed, opening it shows a blank panel where the storage grid belongs. Break one and you get back a plain wooden trapped chest, or a plain wooden chest if it held anything.
why not to keep one
Hovering the cursor over one of these with the map open crashes the game outright. Older versions had a stranger problem: pointing at a placed one froze your character mid-motion, even in mid-air, hid every visible accessory and vanity piece, and locked out item use. You could still turn around, and contact damage passed straight through you harmlessly, until you moved the cursor away and everything resumed. Explosives or a long-reach pickaxe could break them from a distance, though nothing dropped.
sprites that never shipped
The game data also carries trapped versions of every locked chest, plus a barrel, a trash can, and a Dead Man's Chest with no opening state at all. None of them have item IDs, so no editor will produce one. The locked variants still fire their signal when someone tries the lid without a key, and most even have finished open textures.
Two details about the real ones: the little trapped marker is drawn on by the game rather than being part of the sprite, and several chests do something unique when they spring. The Easter one produces a Corrupt Bunny, the Boulder one a miniature boulder, the Snow one just collapses into a heap of snow, and the Forbidden Chest refuses to open at all while the Bast statue on its lid turns to stare at you.
