spotting one before it kills you
From the front it looks like an ordinary gold chest. The tell is overhead: boulder traps are large and sit in a cluster above it, which is far easier to notice than the single tile dart traps to the sides or the explosives buried beneath. A Dangersense Potion will not mark the chest itself, but it lights up every hazard around it, so a gold chest sitting inside a glowing web is your answer. The Grand Design or a Mechanical Lens shows the whole wiring layout at a glance.
defusing it
None of this is dangerous once you have seen it. Wall off the boulder path with any solid block, plug the dart lines, and mine out the explosives, which come away as items you keep along with a pile of wire and actuators. Do not try to swap the chest for a harmless one, because that springs the whole setup anyway.
is it worth seeking out
The loot pool is the same one a normal gold chest at that depth would hold, plus a fair chance at the sweater, which is the only real reason to hunt them. They always generate alone and never inside a cabin. A large world holds proportionally fewer than a small one, since the count scales with width and not with total area.
the autopause quirk
With autopause on, the order of events changes. The explosives go off the moment you open it, and the rest waits until you close the chest and step back into the world. Survive the blast and you can loot in peace, then walk straight into everything else.
