better than the chests it copies

Water Chests sit on the seabed behind a drowning timer, there are only a handful per world, and reaching them comfortably wants gear that is itself inside them. Fishing the same pool from dry sand removes all of that. Water Walking Boots are the pull that matters most, since they are the first link in the chain that ends at Lava Waders, and the Flipper is a slot saver while you are still poking around the ocean floor.

You get one of the five staple chest items per crate, so duplicates pile up fast once you have the two that matter. Shark Bait sits in its own group and can arrive alongside them, which is the only way to get a shark pet without diving. Shell Pile and the bucket are builder material. Treat the whole thing as a cheap side activity for a character stuck waiting on a boss or on an NPC to move in.

two quirks

  • A corrupted, crimson or hallowed ocean still produces them, so a world that has spread badly does not lock you out of the loot.
  • In Remix and Zenith worlds a slice of the biome crates you pull from cavern water arrives as these instead, which is the only situation where you fish one nowhere near the sea.
