what the set gives a summoner
Stardust is the summoner's post-Moon Lord set. It carries the largest minion capacity of any armor, adds a sentry slot on the helmet, pushes summon damage hard, and extends whip reach across the plate and leggings. Everything about it is offense.
Every piece also lights you up as brightly as a Shine Potion, and unlike the other Luminite sets a single piece gives the full glow, so torches become optional the moment you craft anything from it.
the guardian
Completing the set summons a guardian that floats behind you and does not count against your minion cap. It idles until something comes within about thirty tiles, then charges straight at it through solid ground and beats on it until the area is clear, then drifts back to you. It scales with your summon damage and picks up whip tags, so it keeps pace as you gear up instead of falling off.
Because it ignores blocks, it doubles as a defense. Wall yourself into a box and it still reaches whatever is outside, which makes it a reliable engine for an idle farm and a safety net during events when you need a moment to heal. It can also be dyed through the pet dye slot rather than the armor slots.
against valhalla knight
The comparison worth making is with Valhalla Knight, which has far more defense, regenerates health, and offers another sentry slot. Stardust gives all of that up for extra minions, more summon damage, longer whips, and the guardian. At the difficulties where this set exists, most things kill you in a hit or two whether or not you have the extra defense, so the faster kill usually wins. Valhalla is the pick if you are running sentries as the centerpiece or want to survive mistakes.
Stacked with the right accessories and buffs, the set supports a genuinely crowded screen of minions, and the guardian sits outside that count entirely.
where the guardian came from
It was originally built as a nod to Algalon the Observer from World of Warcraft. The community immediately read it as Star Platinum from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure instead, and lead programmer Yoraiz0r eventually accepted that reading. The 1.4 rework, which replaced the old placeable sentry behavior with a barrage of punches, made the second interpretation very hard to argue with.
