Crawltipede spawns as 3 variants that share one bestiary entry; each row is one variant's exact stats.

Banner

Every 50th kill of this enemy drops Crawltipede Banner.

what it is there for

The Crawltipede belongs to the Solar Pillar during the Lunar Events, which puts it after the Lunatic Cultist. It shows no health bar and nearly all of it is armored: the tail segment is the only part that takes real damage, and it takes a great deal of it. It ignores anyone standing on the ground entirely and hunts anyone in the air. That is the whole point of it. Its job is to strip your wings out of the fight so the pillar's ground enemies get a clean run at you.

what counts as standing on something

It checks a narrow column below you for solid tiles, reaching about fifteen tiles down. Platforms count, unless they have been hammered into the lowest position. Planter boxes count. Hammered blocks do not. Standing on the surface of water with Water Walking Boots does not count either. That check is the entire counterplay: run layers of platforms through your arena and you can move up and down freely without ever registering as airborne.

if it does come for you

It corners harder and accelerates faster than any other worm in the game, and good wings on their own will not shake it. Wings plus a Frog Leg or a Soaring Insignia will. Short hops are survivable as long as you land promptly. Trying to outfly it across open sky is not.

killing it

Hitting the tail while the thing corkscrews around you is the difficult part, so use weapons that aim for you. Homing options like the Razorblade Typhoon, Possessed Hatchet or Chlorophyte Bullets work, and minions are better still since they pick the vulnerable segment with no input from you. The tail multiplier makes lifesteal absurd: Vampire Knives refill you from almost empty in a couple of throws, and a strong magic weapon under the Spectre Hood can return an enormous amount of health off one connection, although the healing lockout means the next few seconds give you nothing. If you have already taken a pillar and hold the Solar Eruption, its long sweeping arc catches tails well.

notes

  • There is a trick where you wait for it to coil up, then hover inside the loop with a Cosmic Car Key. It cannot bend sharply enough to reach the middle, so it circles you while you shoot it. Space in there is tight and Corites will find you.
  • It is the only enemy you can actually kill that never displays a health bar.
  • The tail only weak point and the habit of body checking anyone in the air both point straight at Moldorm from the Zelda games.
