The roll fires on anything that would have hurt you, lava and spike traps included, which is unusual for a defensive accessory. You get a puff of smoke and take nothing. What you do not get is any control over when it happens, so treat it as a slow leak in incoming damage rather than something you can plan a fight around. Attacks flagged as instant kills go straight through it.

The chance does not stack with the Master Ninja Gear, so carrying both is a wasted slot. Since the belt is one of the parts that goes into it, the sensible plan is to sit on it until Tabi shows up and then combine them.
