How to craft it

throwing the blade

Hold the attack button through a swing and let go part way, and the saber leaves your hand instead of finishing the arc. It flies level for a moment, then noses down and buries itself in the first floor it meets. Anything that touches the planted blade takes a fast string of hits rather than one, because each strike opens only a brief immunity window. Press attack again and it tears back to you, cutting through whatever is standing in the return lane, and you can call it back mid flight before it ever lands.

It hits hardest while still in the air and weakest once it is stuck in the ground, so the throw pays off most when you catch enemies going out and coming back rather than parking it and walking away. Only one thrown sword can sit in the ground at a time, and a planted one comes home on its own after a minute if you forget about it.

where it fits

This is the Hardmode continuation of the Blue Phaseblade, with the same handling and a lot more weight behind it. Nine colors exist and they behave identically, so the choice is aesthetic, except in team PvP where each side can standardize on one color. Legendary is the modifier worth rerolling for.

light and looks

Each saber throws a faint tint of its own color while you swing it, while it is in flight, and while it sits in the ground, and the sprite itself stays fully lit in the dark. A planted one also spits sparks and a small sparkle where the blade meets the floor, which makes it easy to find again in a dark cave.

trivia

  • The look, the sound and the gem requirement all point at the lightsaber from Star Wars, right down to colored crystals deciding what color the blade comes out.
  • Old worlds still hold broken ones. A saber mounted on a Weapon Rack used to make the rack impossible to break, and rather than patch the behavior the developers rebuilt every phasesaber as a fresh item. Sabers already sitting in an existing world kept the old fault.
