Treat it as a building tool, not a mining tool. The beam reaches much further than a normal pickaxe and it removes only the single block you point at, so you can carve a shape out of terrain from across the room without standing in it or chewing up the tiles around it. For terraforming and for detail work inside a build, that changes the whole workflow.

Mining range accessories extend the beam, and since the beam is also its hitbox, they extend its melee reach as well. It is not a good weapon, but it will push things off you at a distance while you work.

Its pickaxe power is higher than anything else in the game and none of that is needed. No block requires more than the tier below it.

Any common enemy in a Martian Madness event can drop it, which sounds generous until you see the rate. Running the event with a proper arena and letting the trash pile up is far more productive than hunting the saucer, which no longer drops it at all.
