power decides what you can break

Every digging tool carries two numbers the tooltip never shows you. The first is power, and it works as a gate rather than a slider. Obsidian wants 55%, ebonstone, crimstone and hellstone want 65%, cobalt and palladium 100%, mythril and orichalcum 110%, adamantite and titanium 150%, chlorophyte 200%, and lihzahrd brick 210%. One point short and the block takes nothing at all, however long you stand there swinging.

speed is the hidden one

The second number is tool speed, counted as the gap in ticks between hits, so a lower value is a faster tool. It is not the speed word in the tooltip, which only describes the swing animation. Melee speed bonuses from armor and accessories do nothing for it. Mining buffs do, but only for pickaxes and the hybrids that double as pickaxes; drills, axes and hammers ignore them completely. Drills and chainsaws also cannot be reforged for speed, which is why a well reforged pickaxe often beats the drill of the same tier.

Hammers stop gaining wall-breaking speed past 67% power, but altars refuse to break below 80%, which is what makes the Pwnhammer a progression item rather than a building one. Everything else here is a specific job: hooks for vertical movement, buckets and sponges for liquids, wrenches for wiring, the Clentaminator for rewriting whole biomes. Mining tiers are compared side by side under pickaxes.
