how you get a pair

They are not crafted. They come out of the ivy chests buried in the underground jungle and out of the jungle crates you fish up, in both the pre-hardmode and hardmode versions, which makes them a luck item rather than something you can plan around. Hold on to them once movement accessories outclass them, since they are the base for Fairy Boots later.

what they actually do

Walking on grass leaves flowers behind you. Regular, jungle, hallowed and ash grass all work, and mowed grass counts too. The plants are ordinary grass growth underneath, so they give up seeds and Hay exactly as wild ones do, which turns a lap around a flat field into a renewable supply. Pair them with a Sickle and a long straight grass corridor and you will produce hay faster than any deliberate farm.

the cost nobody expects

Wearing them all but eliminates critters spawning from broken plants. Early on, smashing grass is where your bait comes from, and these quietly switch that off. The game checks the nearest player rather than the plant, so in singleplayer the penalty applies to every plant you break, not only the ones the boots grew. In multiplayer, someone else standing closer keeps the normal rate. Take them off before a bait run and put them back after.

what will not grow

  • Nothing sprouts while you stand still, hang from a hook, or cross grass that has been hammered or covered by liquid.
  • Jungle grass will not give you Plantera bulbs, Life Fruit, Nature's Gift or Jungle Rose this way, so it is no shortcut to any of them.
  • The boots only ever grow flowers, never plain grass plants, which means no Lucky Clover from anything they produce.
  • Hallowed grass is the only surface that mixes short and tall flowers. Everywhere else you get one size.
  • Under reversed gravity the flowers grow on the ceiling your head is touching, provided there is room to stand, and the floor under your feet stays bare.
