what it replaces

The guaranteed Sandstone Chest item is the reason to fish a desert at all. Digging out an Underground Desert hunting one specific chest item is slow work, and the biome fights back with Sand Poachers and Tomb Crawlers the whole way down. Any desert counts for fishing, so a pond dug into surface sand gets you the same pool over and over with none of that.

which pulls matter

The Magic Conch is the standout for anyone who does not want to lay track to the Ocean. Dunerider Boots and the Ancient Chisel are quality of life you keep for a long stretch. The Storm Spear and Thunder Zapper are filler by the time you can fish these up. A Bast Statue is worth exactly one copy for an arena wall, and the Snake Charmer's Flute is a toy.

the rare line

Sandstorm in a Bottle turns up rarely and is the thing worth hoping for, since it feeds the balloon chain that ends at the Bundle of Balloons. Everything else is bulk: Sturdy Fossils by the stack, Scarab Bombs for tunneling, and desert paintings for anyone decorating.

the metal rows

Ore and bars each resolve to a single pick, and the crate will not hand you an early metal and a Hardmode metal in the same category. Reading those four rows as two draws makes the haul look a lot less generous than the table implies.

what it will never give you

Two Sandstone Chest items are missing from the pool: the Desert Minecart and the Encumbering Stone. Neither can be fished up here at any rate, so if you want either one you still have to go find a real chest underground. If you need the pre-Hardmode table instead, Shimmer converts these into Oasis Crates.
